What are MMORPG ?

Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games, or MMORPGs as they are commonly known, are role-playing games that bring together large numbers of players over the Internet.

The defining characteristic of MMORPGs is that they all offer a persistent virtual world to play with. These worlds often support thousands of players at the same time, all playing a single character in the game run2game.

What does that mean?

In MMORPGs, you control a character (often referred to as an avatar) and control their actions in the game. Most games feature an experience-based leveling system – players guide their character through a specific task, such as killing a monster, and in turn increases their ability to repeat a similar task. This is usually represented by the overall skill level associated with the character and the sub-levels that represent individual skills.

As the world survives, your skills are saved, meaning that the time and effort you put into the game is permanently reflected in your character.

For example, if you’re playing a combat-oriented game, your overall combat ability may be represented by a combat level – this level increases each time you gain a predetermined amount of experience points, granting you more powerful abilities and skills. If you exit the game, everything will be saved so you can pick up where you left off the next time you play.

When MMORPGs connect thousands of players to the same virtual world central game server and provide a synchronized experience for all. This means if you kill a certain monster, it will not only disappear from your screen, but from all other players as well.

Real-time chat is usually available, typed messages can be shown to other players in and around your location. In addition, typical MMORPGs allow trading between players, as well as battles, duels and teamwork.

Play as a group

One great thing about playing an MMORPG is that almost every game has a system that players can use to collaborate. These can work together to defeat difficult enemies or gather resources to advance team goals. Such groups are known as clans or guilds.

Games within games

MMORPGs offer players many different paths to follow, and the game’s players really define the world they play in. This includes many in-game items that the player creates themselves using the resources they collect.

This process is called crafting and is a very popular alternative to playing a combat-oriented character. Rather than being physically dominant, crafters tend to be very wealthy in terms of in-game assets – they sell their items for in-game currency or other items.

Online or offline?

Offline games are great for relaxation and fun, but they can’t offer the combination of depth and social interaction that MMORPGs offer. Character progression is an important part that allows you to focus on the aspects of the game you enjoy without worrying about the ones you don’t like.

Each character starts out with a similar level and abilities, but you’ll quickly personalize your character, meaning few others are exactly like you.

If you like playing computer games, try MMORPGs. Once you start playing you will never look back.
